I'm a solution architect interested in application integration, data engineering, event-driven architecture, and software design. I'm a lifelong learner and bookworm. My name is pronounced DEH-vin be-AIR. I use he/him prounouns. I live in Lorain, OH with my wife Chrissie and our dog Banjo. We're the proud parents of Nick and Leilani.
We owe it to ourselves and to each other to stand up publicly for what's right, especially in dark times when the rights of so many are under attack around the world and in my own country. Here's some of what I believe:
- I believe in human rights for everyone. I despise bigotry and bullying.
- I believe that diversity and pluralism are vital to the present and future of the United States. I went to highly integrated schools from kindergarten through 12th grade in downtown Cincinnati. It's one of the best and most important things that ever happened to me, and it's shaped my life every day since.
- I believe in community, compassion, and empathy. I believe in a strong social safety net.
- I believe in government by the people and for the people. I believe that nonviolent civil resistance and peaceful protest are vital to democracy and are the height of true patriotism.
- I believe that there's a shortage of perfect movies in the world, and that The Princess Bride is one of them.

- None of the personal writing or code or art or music I've linked to above is produced by LLMs or generative AI unless otherwise disclosed.
- I believe AI in its various forms can be extremely useful. But there are a lot of challenging conversations to have around the ethics of its usage and the impact it has on our work and lives and brains. I saw the movie Tron in the theater when I was a kid, and it blew my mind. Early in the movie, Walter Gibbs (the founder of the company ENCOM) says ruefully, "Won't that be grand? Computers and the programs will start thinking and the people will stop." That line always stuck with me. It seems more relevant than ever.
- Most importantly, I believe in humans making things for other humans, especially when it's done for enjoyment and self-expression. I write and create for fun and fulfillment and connection. I'm not handing that over to a prompt.
